On the 22nd of May , the millionaire footwear businessman went missing. The victim who went out of the house that night had not returned home. On the following day (23) , his body was found by the police with gunshot injuries to his head and chest in a place in the Dompe police division. On the same day , the Mirihana police had taken into custody his vehicle that was left abandoned in the Mirihana police division . Intriguingly , though Shyam’s family had reported this disappearance to the police , despite Shyam’s body being found by the police on the 23rd , his family had not been informed until day before yesterday , 30th . In other words, for a week the police had not intimated that the body had been found. The body of Shyam had been in the Gampaha mortuary for 7 long days !

30th , the relatives have identified the body. The police had also made an egregious blunder deliberately or otherwise , because , when reporting to the media daily on several occasions had not mentioned therein about the murder or that an unidentified body had been found in Dompe or about the abandoned vehicle in Mirihana. This is a wicked wonder ! Should n’t the police in such an abduction (and murder) inform the public via the media immediately and invite the public assistance to identify the deceased? Wasn’t it because the police had the need to suppress the crime that it did not take this action ? 

Meanwhile the relatives of Shyam had been searching for Shyam most frantically . They had also spent large sums of money towards the search.

Following their search they had discovered that Shyam was last seen going with a business friend of his, based on a CCTV camera recording of a neighboring shop. After this information was passed to the police , the latter was unable to neglect or suppress the investigation. Though the friend who was associated with Shyam for 8 years also joined in the search, the relatives began to harbor suspicions on him. After the friend was arrested, two more suspects were taken into custody. These two suspects are underworld criminal murderers , and they were taken into custody by a CCD officer.

When the two underworld criminals and Shyam’s friend made confessions , the CCD officer was shocked beyond belief. 

Shyam’s friend had confessed that he had given Rs. 30 lakhs to DIG Vaas Gunawardena to murder Shyam. The other two suspects had confessed that they are hired assassins of Vaas Gunawardena, and he had paid Rs. Three lakhs to each of them to abduct and kill Shyam . In the confession these two underworld criminals had stated that they have done 9 murders on such contracts. One such contract is the Majestic Praba murder . Another contract murder was when Vaas Gunawardena was the SSP Galle : a Galle businessman was killed in public on the main road by amputating his both hands. Thereafter , the four individuals suspected in that murder were killed while blindfolded near the Poddala Mahason culvert .

The two contract murderers of Vaas Gunawardena had admitted in the confession that it is they had who killed those four individuals. The weapons they used to commit these murders had been supplied by Vaas Gunawardena. These are weapons that are used by the police, and for every murder they had been paid Rs. Two to three lakhs each.

Even as these confessions were made there had been intense pressures brought to bear on the investigating officers so much so that this investigation is in the process of being suppressed. 

Vaas Gunawaradena was a former Director of the CCD. It is the notorious DIG Anura Senanayake who is in charge of it now. In the circumstances attempts are being made to conceal the confessions , and orders had gone out not to make any record of these confessions.

The police chiefs who did not even give publicity via the media that Shyam’s body was found are now through their own media coolies seeking to conceal the hired assassins of Vaas Gunawardena from the ghastly murder , while only revealing Shyam’s friend .

Vaas Gunawardena who was responsible for the murder of the four suspects near the Galle Mahason culvert and earned plus points from Gotabaya came to Kahawatte to trail the suspects in the Kahawatte women murder. After planning the release of the suspects in this murder who were in remand custody , he abducted and murdered them.. Vaas who got promotions over and above others thereby , and became a DIG is now employing hired assassins to abduct and kill wealthy businessmen with impunity after taking huge sums of monies as kickbacks from the enemies of the businessmen.

In the face of these stark revelations , Vaas Gunawardena ought to be taken into custody immediately on the confessions made by the businessman’s friend and the two hired assassins of Vaas Gunawardena. This whole truth behind this murder after huge cash payments collected by Vaas is now known to the IGP and a number of high rung police officers. When a high ranking police officer who was a Director of the CCD is himself involved in contract murders , surely the defense secretary of a country cannot claim that he is not aware, unless he is a party to it or he is so stupid and inefficient as not to know. 

It is now learnt that those involved are moving heaven and earth to suppress this heinous crime . Lanka e news which has always been in the vanguard of championing the cause of the law abiding citizens and seeking to enthrone law and justice by its stark exposures is once again exposing another episode of brutal lawlessness of the higher ups with a view to defeating the concerted attempts to suppress this ruthless crime.

மட்டக்களப்பு களுவாஞ்சிகுடி பொலிஸ் பிரிவுக்குட்பட்ட நான்கு ஆலயங்கள் நேற்று முன்தினம் இரவு உடைக்கப்பட்டு கொள்ளையிடப்பட்ட சம்பவம் தொடர்பில் கருத்து தெரிவிக்கும்போதே அவர் இவ்வாறு குறிப்பிட்டார். 

மட்டக்களப்பு நகரின் வடக்கு பிரதான நுழைவாயில் பிள்ளையாரடியில் புத்தர் சிலை நிறுவுவதற்கு எடுத்த முயற்சிகளை மட்டக்களப்புவாழ் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் தலைமையில் மக்கள் எதிர்த்தார்கள். 

அதற்கான அமைதிப் போராட்டம் ஒன்றையும் கடந்த காலத்தில் முன்னெடுத்தனர். 

இந்நிலையில் குருக்கள்மடம் ஸ்ரீ செல்லக் கதிர்காமர் ஆலயம், குருக்கள்மடம் ஐயனார் ஆலயம், மாங்காடு பிள்ளையார், பாண்டிருப்பு திரௌபதி ஆலயம் ஆகியன ஒரே நாளில் உடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 

இதில் ஸ்ரீ செல்லக் கதிர்காமர் ஆலயத்தில் 19 விக்கிரகங்கள் உடைக்கப்பட்டு 20 பவுண் பெறுமதியான தங்க தகடுகள் கொள்ளையிடப்பட்டுள்ளன. 

இந்த செயற்பாட்டின் பின்னணியில் அடிப்படை இனவாதக் கும்பல் இருப்பதாக சந்தேகம் எழுந்துள்ளது. 

இச்சம்பவம் தொடர்பில் ஜனாதிபதி உடனடியாக தலையிட்ட வேண்டும் என இந்து மக்கள் முன்னணியின் சார்பில் கோரிக்கை விடுவதாக நல்லையா குமரகுருபரன் தெரிவித்தார்.

பொலிஸ் உயரதிகாரி ஒருவர் பல இலட்ச ரூபாய்களுக்காக  மனிதர்களை கடத்திச் சென்று கொலை செய்யும் கொந்தராத்து காரர் என்று கைதுசெய்யப்பட்ட  கூலிக்கு கொலை செய்யும் இரு கொலையாளிகள் C.I.D க்கு ( குற்ற புலனாய்வு பிரிவு )   அளிக்கப்பட வாக்குமூலதினால் தெரியவந்துள்ளது.

கடந்த 22ந் திகதி கடத்திச் சென்று பம்பலபிட்டி பிரதேசத்தில் கொலைசெயப்பட்ட    எம் எச் எச் எம் சியாம் அவர்களின் கொலை சம்பந்தமாக நடத்தப் பட்ட புலன் விசாரணைகளின் போது மேற்படி அதிர்ச்சி தகவல்கள் வெளிவந்துள்ளன. இந்த பொலிஸ் உயரதிகாரி இது போன்ற ஒன்பது கொலைகளுக்கு பொறுப்பு கூறவேண்டியவர் என்றும் தெரியவந்துள்ளது .

பாதணி வியாபாரத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள , செல்வந்தரான எம் எச் எச் எம் சியாம் அவர்கள் கடந்த 2013/05/22 ந் திகதிமுதல் காணாமல் போயுள்ளார் . குறித்த தினத்தில் இரவு தனது வாகனத்தில் வெளியில் சென்ற அவர் மீண்டும் வீடு திரும்ப வில்லை . அடுத்த நாள் காலையில் தலையிலும், நெஞ்சிலும் துப்பாகியால் சுடப்பட்டு கொல்லப்பட்ட சியாமின் பூத உடல் ,தொம்பே போலிஸ் பிரிவின் ஓரிடத்திலிருந்து கண்டெடுக்க பட்டுள்ளது . அதேவேளை மிரிஹானையில் கைவிடப்பட்ட நிலையிலிருந்த அவருடைய வாகனமமும்  கண்டெடுக்க பட்டுள்ளது.

சியாம் அவர்களின் குடும்பத்தினரால் இவர காணாமல் போனது விடயமாக போலீசில் முறைப்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டும் . கடந்த 23 ந் திகதி இவரின் பூத வுடல் போலிசாரால் கண்டெடுக்கப் பட்டிருந்தபோதும் , கடந்த (30) ந் திகதி வரை சுமார் ஒரு வார காலமாக கம்பஹா வைத்தியசாலை மோச்சரியில் இவருடைய பூதவுடல் வைக்கப் பட்டிருந்தும்  இவ்விடயம் அவரது குடும்பத்திற்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டிருக்க வில்லை . 30 ந் திகதி சியாமுடைய குடும்பத்தினரால் அவருடைய உடல் அடையாளம் காணப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தினமும் போலிஸ் செய்திகளை வானொலிகள் மூலமும்,பத்திரிகைகள் மூலமும் மக்களுக்கு அறியப்படுத்தும் போது துப்பாக்கிச் சூட்டினால் கொல்லப்பட்ட ,அடையாளம் காணப்படாத சடலமொன்று தொம்பே பிரதேசத்திலிருந்து கண்டெடுக்க பட்டிருந்தும் , கைவிடப்பட்ட நிலையிலிருந்த வாகனமொன்று மிரிஹான பிரதேசத்திலிருந்து கண்டெடுக்கபட்டிருந்த போதும் இது விடயமாக ஊடகங்களில் தெரிவிக்கப் படாதது ஏன் என்ற சந்தேகம் வலுத்துள்ளது . எவராவது நபரொருவர் காணாமல் போனால் அவர் பற்றிய தகவல்களை ஊடகங்களில் தெரிவித்து அவரை கண்டு பிடிக்க பொதுமக்களின் உதவியை ஏன் நாடவில்லை ?  இச் செய்தியை ஊடகங்களுக்கு கசிய விடாமல் மறைத்தது , மேற்படி நிகழ்வில் வெளிச் சொல்லக் கூடாத பாதுகாகக்கப் படவேண்டிய தொரு இரகசியம் இருந்த காரணத்தினால்  அல்லவா? என்ற சந்தேகம் எழுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதற்கிடையில் சியாமவர்களுடைய குடும்பத்தினர், மும்முரமாக  காணாமல் போன சியாமை தேடும் முயற்சியை பல வழிகளிலும் முடுக்கி விட்டனர். பல சிரமங்களுக்கு முகம் கொடுத்தனர். இதன் போது சியாம் அவர்கள் கடைசியாக அவருடைய நெருங்கிய நண்பரான வியாபார பங்காளியுடன் சென்றிருப்பதை அறிந்து கொண்டுள்ளார்கள். அதற்கான ஆதாரமாக அவர்கள் கடைசியாக புறப்பட்டு சென்ற வாகனத்தில் ஏறும் போது, பக்கத்திலிருந்த வியாபார நிலையத்தின் cctv கேமராவில் பதிவாகி இருந்த வீடியோ சாட்சியமாக கிடைத்துள்ளது. அதன் பின் சியாமின் வியாபார பங்காளியின்  மீது சியாமின் குடும்பத்தினரின் சந்தேகம் வலுத்துள்ளது. ஆனாலும் குறிப்பிட்ட நண்பரும் சியாமை தேடும் நடவடிக்கைகளில் மும்முரமாக ஈடுபட்டிருந்துள்ளார்.

குடும்பத்தினரால் தேடியறிந்து பெற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட தகவல்களை போலீசில் சமர்பித்த வேளையில் , சியாமின் கொலை சம்பந்தமான மேல் நடவடிக்கைகளை உதாசீனப் படுத்த முடியாத நிலைமை போலிசுக்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

அதை தொடர்ந்து சியாமின் வியாபார பங்காளியான நண்பர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார். அவரைதொடர்ந்து மேலும் பாதாள உலக கூலி கொலையாளிகள்   இருவர் C.I.D யினரால்  (குற்ற புலனாய்வு பிரிவு) இவ்விடயமாக  கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர் .

கைது செய்யப்பட சியாமவர்களுடன் எட்டு வருடங்களாக நம்பிக்கையுடன் பழகிய    நண்பராலும்  ஏனைய இருவராலும் அளிக்கப்பட வாக்குமூலத்தை கேட்ட போலிஸ் அதிகாரிகள் திகைப்படைந்துள்ளனர்.

சியாம் அவர்களின் நண்பரால்  சியாமை கொல்வதற்காக பிரதி போலிஸ் மா அதிபர் வாஸ் குணவர்தனவுக்கு 30 இலட்ச ருபாய் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது..

 கைது செய்யப்பட பாதாள உலக கூலி கொலையாளிகள்   இருவரின் வாக்கு மூலத்தால் மேலும் தெரியவந்துள்ளதாவது,…..

“தாம் குறிப்பிட்ட பொலிஸ் உயர் அதிகாரியின் கூலி கொலையாளிகள் என்றும், சியாமை கொலை செய்வதற்காக தமக்கு தலா மூன்று இலட்ச ரூபா வீதம் இருவருக்கும் ஆறு இலட்ச ரூபா  வழங்கப்பட்டதாகவும் , வாஸ் குணவர்தன   சியாமை கொலை செய்வதற்காக  30  இலட்ச ரூபா கொந்தராத்து (உடன்படிக்கை) பெற்றிருந்ததாகவும்  கூறியுள்ளார்கள்.

குறித்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரியினால் ஏற்கனவே  பெற்று தரப்பட்ட ஒன்பது கொலைகளை தாம் செய்துள்ளதாகவும் அதில் ஒன்று மெஜஸ்டிக் பிரபாவின் கொலையென்றும், இன்னுமொன்று காலியைசேர்ந்த பிரபல  வியாபாரியொருவரின் கைகளை வெட்டி பிரதான வீதியின் மத்தியில் கொலைசெய்யப்பட்ட நிகழ்வில்,  சந்தேகத்தின் பேரில் கைது செய்யப்பட நால்வரையும் போலிஸ் ஜாமீனிலிருந்து விடுவித்து , பின்பு அவர்கள் நால்வரையும்  . போத்தல மகசோன் வாய்காலுக்கு அருகில் கண்களை கட்டி கொன்றுபோட்டதும நாங்கள் தான் என்றும் இவர்களிருவரும் வாக்கு மூலம் கொடுத்துள்ளார்கள் . இவர்களால் செய்யப்பட கொலைகளுக்காக பாவிக்கப்பட்ட போலிசுக்கு சொந்தமான ஆயுதங்கள் அனைத்தையும் இந்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரி மூலமே வழங்கி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஒவ்வொரு கொலைக்காகவும் தலா மூன்று அல்லது இரண்டு இலட்சம் இவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

இவர்களின் இவ்வொப்புதல் வாக்குமூலமங்களை பதிவுசெய்து விசாரணைகளை தொடரும் குற்ற புலனாய்வு பிரிவின் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு மேலிடத்திலிருந்து பல அழுத்தங்கள் பிரயோகிக்கப் பட்டிருப்பதால் தற்போது இவ்விசாரணைகளில் அசமந்த நிலை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளதாக தெரிய வருகிறது. மேற்படி வாக்கு மூலங்களை பதிவுசெய்ய வேண்டாம் என்று மேலிடத்து கட்டளைகள் பிரயோகிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளதாக தெரிய வருகின்றது

சியாம் காணாமல் போனதையும், பிறகு அவர் சடலமாக கண்டெடுக்கப் பட்டததையும் . ஊடகங்களுக்கு தெரியபடுத்தாத போலிஸ் உயரதிகாரிகள், கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள சியாமின் நண்பரை மாத்திரம் உலகுக்கு காட்டிவிட்டு கூலிக்கு ஆள்கொல்லும் இந்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரியின் செயற்பாடுகளை மூடிமறைக்கப் பார்கின்றது என்று லங்கா ஈ நியூஸ் குற்றம் சுமத்தியுள்ளது . காலி மகசோன் வாய்க்காலருகில் நான்கு பேரை கொன்றொழித்து மேலிடத்தில்  நல்ல பெயரெடுத்த குறித்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரி கஹவத்தைக்கு வந்தது கஹவத்தையில் இடம்பெற்ற தொடர் பெண் கொலையாளிகளை கண்டறிவதற்காகவாகும். கஹவத்தை பொலிசாரால் கைதுசெய்யப்பட்டு போலிஸ் விளக்கமறியலில் உள்ள சந்தேக நபர்களை ஜாமீனில் விடுதலை செய்து பின்பு அவர்களை கொன்று விடுவதே இவருக்கு வழங்கப் பட்டிருந்த பொறுப்பாகும் . இதனூடாக பதவி உயர்வுகளை குறுக்கு வழிகளில் பெறுவதே இந்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரியின் எண்ணமாக இருந்துள்ளது என்றும் லங்கா ஈ நியூஸ் மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

சியாமவர்களின் வியாபார பங்காளி நண்பரினதும் கொலையாளிகளினதும் வாக்குமூலங்ககளின் அடிப்படையில் இந்த பொலிஸ் அதிகாரி உடனடியாக கைது செய்யப்படவேண்டியது சட்டமாகும். இவ்விடயம் தற்போது போலிஸ் மா அதிபருக்கும் போலிஸ் மேலதிகாரிகளுக்கும் தெரியவந்து விட்டது . C.I.D யின (குற்ற புலனாய்வு பிரிவு) முன்னாள் பணிப்பாளரினால் ஆட்கள் கடத்தப்பட்டு கொலை செய்வதாயின் இவ்விடயம் மேலிடத்துக்கு தெரியாமல் நடைபெற வாய்ப்பில்லை என்பதால் இந்த நிலைமை ஒரு பயங்கர சூழ்நிலையை தோற்றுவித்துள்ளதால் மேற்படி நிகழ்வுகளை மக்களறியாமல் மூடி மறைப்பதற்கு மேலிடம் நடவடிக்கைகள் மேற்கொண்டு வருவதாகவும் லங்கா ஈ நியூஸ் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இதுவிடயமாக பிந்திவரும் செய்திகள் மேற்படி விசாரணைகளை போலிஸ் புலன் விசாரணை பிரிவுக்கு (C.I.D.) கையளிக்க பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் இவ்வாறான விசாரணைகள் மேற்படி புலன் விசாரணை பிரிவுக்கு வழங்கப்படுவதில் பாரிய உள்நோக்கம் உள்ளதாகவும் ஏற்கனவே இது போன்ற விசாரணைகள் (C.I.D.)க்கு வழங்கப் பட்டு சாட்சிகள் இல்லாமலாகப்பட்டு தள்ளுபடியான ஏராளமான வழக்குகள் உள்ளதென்றும் தெரிவிக்கப் படுகின்றது.

பேஸ்புக்கை தாக்கும் புதிய வகை ட்ரொஜன் ஹோர்ஸ் வைரஸ் ஒன்று பரவ ஆரம்பித்துள்ளதால் கவனமாக பேஸ்புக்கை பயன்படுத்துமாறு மைக்ரோசொப்ட் எச்சரித்துள்ளது.

‘Trojan:JS/Febipos’ எனப் பெயரிடப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த வைரஸ் தன்னியக்கமாக Like, Comment மற்றும் Share செய்து குழப்பங்களை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது.

தற்போது பிரேஸில் மொழியில் பிரேசில் நாட்டில் அதிகளவில் வியாபித்துள்ள இந்த வைரஸ் ஐரோப்பா நாடுகளுக்கும் விரைவில் ஆங்கில மொழியிலும் பரவுவதற்கு வாய்ப்புள்ளதாக தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது.

Firefox, Chrom போன்ற இணைய உலாவிகளின் Plug-ins என்ற போர்வையிலேயே இந்த வைரஸ் பரவுவதாகவும் குறித்த வைரஸ் தாக்கிய கணனியின் மூலம் அது தொடர்பான ஆய்வுகளை மேற்கொள்ளுவதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ள மைக்ரோசொப்ட் நிறுவனம் அதிலிருந்து ஓரளவு தப்பிக்கவும் சில வழிகளைக் கூறியுள்ளது.

அதாவது தரவேற்றம் செய்யக் கூறி புதிதாக Firefox, Chrom ஊடாக வரும் Plug-insகளை தவிர்த்தல் மேலும் பேஸ்புக்கினைப் பயன்படுத்திவிட்டு முறைப்படி அதிலிருந்து வெளியேறுவதையும் உறுதிப்படுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் எனவும் மைக்ரோசொப்ட் எச்சரித்துள்ளது.

இதேவேளை இந்த வைரஸ் விரைவில் பிரேஸில் தவிர்ந்த ஏனைய நாடுகளுக்கும் பல மொழிகளில் பரவலடையும் வாய்ப்புகள் அதிகளவில் உள்ளதாக கூறப்படுகின்றது.

Sri Lanka has a chance to defeat majoritarian extremism of the JHU-NFF-BBS politically

Yugoslavia was a sister country of Sri Lanka; a fellow founder of the Non Aligned Movement in that country’s capital Belgrade in 1961. Yugoslavia no longer exists. The breakup of that country resulted from a chain reaction that commenced with the dramatic change of the Yugoslav Constitution promulgated by the sagacious socialist Marshal Tito and the drastic reduction of the powers of the autonomous province of Kosovo followed by the dissolution of the Kosovo assembly in 1990. Sri Lanka must not proceed down the same path which leads over a precipice.

The country stands at a crossroads. A parliamentary victory for the JHU bill will complete the negative process which commenced with Sinhala Only in 1956 and the distortion in 1972 of the laudable shift to a Republic with mono-linguistic and mono-religious hegemony. If ’56 and ’72 were paving stones for the Tamil Eelam project, the passage of the JHU bill to abolish the 13th amendment will complete the process of the legitimisation of secessionism.

A victory for the JHU will also cast a pall over the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and guarantee Sri Lanka’s defeat at the UN Human Rights Council in March 2014. It will embarrass our allies Russia and China and drive South Africa and much of the Non-Aligned Movement away from us. It will irreversibly discredit and radically isolate the country and the Sinhalese, regionally and internationally. In short, in terms of Sri Lanka’s national interest, it will be the single most self-destructive act this parliament could perform.
Conversely, a defeat of the JHU bill will enable Sri Lanka to put the stigma of majoritarian extremism behind it. Such a victory will be the necessary complement of the military victory of May 18th 2009 and the diplomatic victory of May 27-28, 2009. Having militarily defeated the secessionist minoritarian fascism of the LTTE, Sri Lanka has a chance to defeat majoritarian extremism of the JHU-NFF-BBS politically.

In the run-up to the parliamentary battle, is a dual debate in Sri Lankan politics. The Sinhala polity is divided between on the one hand, those who wish to abolish the 13th amendment or delete land and police powers from it and on the other, those who see fit to proceed, however reluctantly, with elections to the Northern Provincial Council without attempting any drastic truncation of the powers devolved upon it. The Tamil polity is divided between, on the one hand, those who are keen to contest the Northern PC election and regard the 13th amendment as worthy of defence, and on the other, those who regard the 13th amendment as hardly worth the paper it is written on.

What is missing in the picture is any drawing together and mutual reinforcement between the moderates or pragmatists on both sides of the ethnic divide who defend, however reluctantly, the provincial council and the prospect of elections to it in September.

What is also missing is the engagement of the intelligentsia, especially civil society intelligentsia, in either supporting the Sinhala moderates in this important battle or in building a bridge between the Sinhala and Tamil moderates in defence of the existing system of devolution of power to the provinces.

The lack of a structured dialogue between the Sinhala and Tamil parliamentary moderates across Government and Opposition lines, deprives each other of vital support and partnership.

That, taken together with the absence of engagement in the ongoing battle by the intelligentsia prevents the construction or reconstitution of a zone of moderate opinion in polity and society.

The battle over the 13th amendment provides an enormous opportunity in the battle of ideas, because the arguments adduced in favour of abolition or gutting are symptomatic of the most retrogressive notions within our society ranging from the conservative to the militarist, the neoconservative to the racist. Grappling with and combating these ideas provides a fine opportunity for asserting the values of reason, democracy and pluralism.

Why then isn’t the battle being joined? The answer is political and ideological sectarianism. There are important precedents. When SWRD Bandaranaike was striving to defend the pact with Chelvanayakam, the powerful, union-based left was absent from the fray. Had it thrown its weight behind SWRD, the history of this country may have been significantly different and better.

Contemporary sectarianism takes two forms. The first is that the 13th amendment doesn’t deserve defending because the Tamil people need and deserve something considerably beyond it. The second is that the hole is on Mahinda Rajapaksa’s side of the boat, or that he is patently insincere and merely playing ‘good cop’ to the far right’s ‘bad cop’.

The first argument is easily dispensed with. The TNA should contest the election even if the council is gutted of most of its powers, just as one should not abandon even the skeleton of a house that is one’s patrimony simply because someone has made off with its roof.

The second argument, even if true is irrelevant. The opportunity for a politico-ideological battle against neo-conservatism, racism and ethno-religious fascism is far too important to be contingent upon a reading of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s politics, let alone speculation about his psyche.

Resistance against the JHU’s counter-reform bill provides the only opportunity that has arisen in years, for the SLFP parliamentary group to defeat the parties of the extremist fringe which have ideologically dominated the UPFA administration and distorted its discourse.

If however, the bad guys win, the centre of gravity of Sri Lankan politics and society will shift still further to the right. It may even impact upon the choice of candidacy. If the neo-con project with its totalitarian notion of national security succeeds, the present dispensation will appear in a roseate afterglow as an era of tolerance and democracy.

The battle to defeat the JHU-NFF-BBS attack on provincial devolution is thus utterly decisive. Against such a backdrop, only an aficionado of black humour would appreciate as I do, an invitation I received in the mail for a conclave at which the best and the brightest of Sri Lanka’s cosmopolitan intelligentsia are scheduled to discuss and debate such exquisite irrelevancies as “The Past in the Future: the ethical future of the archive in the Dotcom age”, “Ethical Reconstruction: Primitive Accumulation in the Apparel Sector?”, “Philanthrocapitalism, Philanthronationalism: the ethics of corporate gifts in post-conflict Sri Lanka” and “On Heterophobic and Heterophilic Casteism and anti-Casteism”. Where the topic is relevant, such as “Diplomacy at the UN Human Rights Council”, the sole designated presenter is Yolanda Foster of Amnesty International (which exclusivity is no fault of either Ms Foster or AI).

No Gramscian ‘organic intellectual’ stuff or words for a Modern Prince, here. If these are the good guys and gals and this is their discourse, no wonder the bad guys are way ahead: they have the advantage of being organic and sounding ‘national popular’.
